F.A.Q.
We have put together a list of frequently asked questions to assist you. If you have a question that has not been addressed, please get in touch.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a safe and smart system of physical exercise developed in the early 20th century by a young German called Joseph Pilates. He designed his own “apparatus” (today’s Pilates equipment) to help improve physical strength, flexibility, posture and enhance wellness and mental awareness. Pilates is a full body and low impact type of exercise suitable for all levels. It conditions the whole body with emphasis on breathing and postural awareness.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Pilates improves body awareness, efficiency of movement, agility and flexibility. It builds strength and develops control and endurance for the whole body. It works the body as a unit and improves alignment, breathing, core strength, coordination and balance. Pilates exercises are suitable for everyone as they can be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced.
WHAT IS THE STUDIO TIMETABLE?
The studio is open from 6:30am to 8pm Mondays to Thursdays, from 6:30am to 4pm on Friday’s, from 6:00am to 2pm on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays. Our classes are 55 minutes sessions starting hourly from the studio opening time. In case you need an earlier start, we are happy to arrange a 6am session on weekdays depending on our availability. Please note that we might not always be free or available during opening hours. If you would like to come by we advise that you contact us first so we can make sure one of us is free to welcome and assist you.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT?
If it’s your first time at Plank, we strongly encourage you to do an Initial Assessment which is a great opportunity for the instructor to get to know you, discuss your fitness and medical history, see how your body moves and design an exercise plan specifically for you. The Initial Assessment is a private session where the instructor will spend time getting to know your body, making sure you understand the Pilates principals and yes you do get to move.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIVATE, DUET AND SEMI-PRIVATE SESSIONS?
A private session is one instructor to one student. This type of session is recommended at the start of your Pilates journey, particularly if you have never done Pilates before. A duet is a shared session with you and one other person. A semi-private is a shared session of up to three people with an instructor. Although there are other people with you, this is not a group class, as each client will be given exercises from their own specific Pilates program and guided by the instructor.
CAN ANYONE DO PILATES?
Pilates is considered a safe exercise method for almost everyone and it is particularly beneficial as a rehabilitation program. However, it’s not only used for this purpose. People looking to improve their fitness level also benefit hugely from Pilates. This is one of the reasons it has become so popular with sports men and women. No matter what your condition is, the sport you practice, your age or your fitness goals; Pilates can work for you.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO PILATES?
Joseph Pilates wouldn’t teach any student that could not commit to at least three sessions a week. These days, we all have pretty busy lives so this is not always possible. Ideally coming to the studio 2-3 times a week would be great and you would be able to see the results quicker. However, if you are only able to commit to coming once a week, you will still benefit from Pilates.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Pilates is a physical exercise so make sure you wear comfortable exercise clothing and clean socks. We provide all the equipment so you just need to bring a bottle of water, a positive attitude and most importantly, a smile.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED IN THE STUDIO?
The Pilates method we teach uses specific equipment which was originally designed by Joseph Pilates: the Reformer, Wunda Chair, High Barrel, Spine Corrector and Trapeze Table. With the exception of the Barrel and Spine Corrector, all the equipment uses springs to assist or resist the movement. There are also small apparatus that we incorporate into our sessions such as magic circles, fitness bands, foam rollers, rotating discs and exercise balls. Plank is a fully equipped Pilates studio and you’ll get to see and use all of the equipment mentioned above.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PILATES AND YOGA?
Together with martial arts, weight lifting, ballet and various other types of physical exercise, Yoga was one of the inspirations for Joseph Pilates when he created his method. Both Yoga and Pilates place great emphasis on the body & mind connection and also on breathing. However, in Pilates there’s no spiritual focus. In Pilates the focus is movement with quality and precision in conjunction with breathing and core connection. Pilates is also a great form of rehabilitation from injury or surgery. Another difference is the fact that Pilates has its own equipment which can facilitate or add more challenge to the movement.
